Raja Ampat is one of the best marine environment in the world. It has got a lot of tropical islands that are surrounded by coral reef. Most visitors go there to enjoy swimming, snorkeling and scuba diving. They could see various kinds of marine creatures from the tiny pygmy seahorse and to big fish like manta and dolphins.

Most visitors choose Waigeo island as their choice for birding. It is easy to reach the island because there are regular ferry service that go between  Sorong city and Waigeo. 

Visiting birders also need binoculars and camera with telephoto lenses. This will enable them to watch and take pictures of birds. 

In general visitors spend around 3 to 4 days in Waigeo to watch a lot of speciea of birds there. The birding trip in Waigeo could be combined with wildlife tour in Klabili village of Tambrauw regency or the forest at the outskirts of Sorong city.

Birding Tour in Sonder of Minahasa Highland

Sonder is a small subdistrict town in the Minahasa Highland of North Sulawesi, Indonesia. It is a peaceful and green area with farmlands, hills, forests, and mountain slopes. The weather is cool, and the landscape is beautiful. This makes Sonder a good place for birdwatching.

There are a lot of species of birds that live in the forest, farmland and wetland of Sonder. Some of them are endemic to Sulawesi island. Visitors who enjoy birding can walk through the villages, along the small roads, and on forest trails. Bird viewing and Snorkeling in Raja Ampat

Waigeo island is recommended destination for bird watchers who want to see Red Bird of Paradise and Wilson's Bird of Paradise as well as other tropical birds such as Palm Cockatoo, Sulphur-crested Cockatoo, Yellow-faced Myna, Rufous-bellied Kookaburra and etc. in Raja Ampat.

Bird viewing is carried out in the mornings and late afternoons before sunset time in areas along the roadsides in southern Waigeo as well inside the forest of the island. 

Visitors need camera and telephoto lens to take photographs of the tropical birds that often sit on the branches of trees. Binoculars with extra dispersion lens will greatly enhance the bird viewing experience of visitors who spend their birding holiday in Raja Ampat.

The coral reef that thrive along the coast of Waigeo is the habitat of a lot of marine life including parrotfish, moorish idol, anemonefish, wrasse, butterflyfish and etc. 

Snorkeling trip can be conducted by speed boat to various coral reef sites in Raja Ampat including Kabui bay, Lesser Urai, Friwen, Five Rocks, Mioskon island, Arborek, Yenbuba strait Cape Kri and etc. 

Visitors need to bring their own snorkeling mask and fins. Marine life can be photographed during the snorkeling activities. Some underwater cameras are now available on the market. The Nikon W300 and Olympus TG-7 are quite popular among snorkelers and scuba divers.

Minahasa Peninsula is a region in North Sulawesi Province of Indonesia that has become a popular destination for wildlife watching. There are several sites which tourists can visit including Tangkoko Batu Angus Nature Reserve in Biting municipality, Mount Mahawu and Sonder's Farm Forest in Minahasa highland.

Water birds and ground walking birds that can be seen in Lake Linow and rice field area include White-browed Crake, Buff-banded Rail, Barred Rail, Cinnamon Bittern, Cattle Egret, Little Egret, White-breasted Waterhen, Isabeline Bush-hen, Purple Heron, and etc. There are also other birds such as White-breasted Woodswallow, Barn Swallow, White-nest Swiftlet, Collared Kingfisher, Chestnut Munia, Scaly-breasted Munia that birdwatchers can observe in the rice field environment.

The transitional zone between lower elevation and higher elevation forest is good for watching such birds as Pale Blue Monarch, Sulawesi Brush Cuckoo, Yellow-billed Malkoha, Black-naped Oriole, and etc.
